A new project is in the making. Yuvi Gerstein and Shuli Oded are developing a new installation which brings out of service mailboxes to life. The mailboxes were recently removed by the postal service, as these are becoming more and more scarce. We decided to bring them to life, by making them into musical instruments that could play music and also light up a whole building at the same time.
The project is still in development, but last night’s tests were encouraging. We used the brilliant new Mogees sensor to detect hits on the mailboxes and these were converted into midi using Ableton live. The midi was then fed to another computer controlling lights using DMX. The end result is that each hit on the mailbox creates a sound and lights up the entire building in front of it as well. More updates to come on this exciting project.
